How to upgrade your PS5 storage: Installing an SSD (step-by-step)

This guide applies to both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

What you need before you start

  • A compatible SSD with heatsink (click here to browse compatible options available at VG Stores)*
  • 1 cross-head screwdriver

*Your SSD must meet the following requirements:

  • Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe
  • Capacity: 250GB – 8TB
  • Cooling: Heatsink required
  • Fit: Must physically fit inside the PS5 expansion slot

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

The internal layout may vary slightly depending on your PS5 model group, but the process remains the same.

Step 1: Power down and position the console

  • Turn off the PS5 completely.
  • Remove all cables.
  • Place the console on a flat surface with the logo side facing down (disc drive side down if applicable).

Step 2: Remove the outer cover

  • Gently lift the corner of the cover.
  • Slide the panel toward you to remove it.
  • Set it aside safely.

Step 3: Locate the expansion slot

  • Inside, you will see a rectangular metal cover secured by a screw.
  • This protects the SSD expansion bay.

Step 4: Remove the expansion slot cover

  • Use your screwdriver to remove the screw.
  • Lift off the metal cover.
  • You will now see the SSD mounting area and spacer.

Step 5: Adjust the spacer (if needed)

  • The slot includes a spacer that corresponds to SSD lengths (30, 42, 60, 80, 110).
  • Move the spacer to match the length of your SSD.

Step 6: Insert the SSD

  • Hold the SSD at a slight upward angle.
  • Insert it firmly into the connector.
  • Once fully inserted, gently push it down so it rests on the spacer.
  • Secure it with the screw. Do not over tighten.

Step 7: Replace the covers

  • Reattach the metal expansion slot cover and tighten the screw.
  • Reattach the PS5 outer panel by sliding it back into place.
  • Reconnect all cables.

Formatting the SSD

When you power on your PS5:

  1. You will see a prompt to format the SSD.
  2. Select Format M.2 SSD.

⚠️ Formatting permanently erases all data on the drive. Do not turn off the console during formatting.

Once complete, the system will display the drive’s read speed.
